Bird Man asked how the Spring Bird Count went two weeks ago. I said lousy-the weather was terrible for watching fowl. Seems that if they were smart enough to not go out, I should be at least that smart and stay in.This past week was another story though as we tied the record number of species we've seen in our neck of the woods/city. This includes at least one bird we've never had here before, the Rose Breasted Grosbeak, as well as a return visit from the Swainson's Thrush.

We had a Yellow Rumped Warbler just the day before the count began, which stinks because we would have broken the old record. We also saw pairs of Orchard and Baltimore Orioles at my folks' house, which was pretty cool.

Starlings were introduced to North America by your Amish ancestors in Pennsylvania as a form of insect control for agriculture now the resulting crop damage exceeds the benefit... argh!!! Bird Man
Ok now the real story...your ancestors attempt failed in Pennsylvania. Eugene Schieffelin a German immigrant releases the birds in Central Park in 1890. He attempted to release in North America every bird species mention in Shakespeare. Thanks Pal now we have 200 million of the nasty things from coast to coast!! Bird Man!
