My silent protest

Have you wondered what I've been up to? I've been busy holding a silent protest in my front lawn. The garbage totes were delivered today and line main street here in River City.

They look beautiful against the golden fall foliage!

The other side says "Less Service". Folks have been blowing horns all morning in support....I think...??

How lovely. I'm surprised we haven't gone to this here in Capital City yet.

Where I grew up, if you had an alley, the trash was picked up back there. Too bad that's not the case where you are.

thank you for obeying the sign ordinance and not placing your protest in the tree island.

Could they be any bigger? The city no longer has to worry about Spring Clean-up. You can fit a refrigerator, bicycle, and a microwave in one of these monsters and still have room for a raccoon or two! Great for the environment - why recycle - throw everything in it. Seriously, our seniors will be leaving them at the curb full time -- they can't move them and MORE importantly WHY SHOULD THEY HAVE TO! Our water and garbage bills went up for this?? I want a refund.

Great taste.....less filling!

More than 24 hours after being dropped off, the enormous totes still litter the streets of river city. And likely always will.

Thank you mayor and council for making living in our old neighborhoods that much more enjoyable. 50% rental rate, deteriorating infrastructure, slums galore..and now you had to go and screw this up.

I think a recall is more in order.

In the words of your hero Ronald Reagan "There you go again"....lol!
The story nationally is that the republican party is out of ideas....hmmmmm so dredge up the old idea of privatization and then jam the idea down the thoats of the citizens, if you can't come up with something new.

Maybe the slum lords forgot to tell their tenants that the totes are now theirs to deal with!

We now have socialized garbage service in Plymouth. I thought Republicans didn't go for that sort of behavior! I guess if it saves them a buck they can rationalize any practice and shove it down our throats and label it conservatism. Oh but wait a minute - CORRECTION - those tax dollars that have been piling up for a generation are supposed to be utilized for the good of our community not rolling over in cds while our leaders play the poverty card.

Oh Oh Batman!someone out there is a little confused. It isn't socialized garbage collection it borders on a government sanctioned monopoly. The long serving Republican Clerk Treasurer is sitting on a substantial pile of money that she refuses to let anyone touch. It is time to either spend some of it or lower city tax rates.

Let's look at this money situation. The City has it, the County doesn't -- since the City is run by certain individuals (I'm not naming names to protect the guilty) who do not live in the city -- will the purse strings get loosened and somehow money will flow to the County? I know in the past they have found little ways to acquire funding from the City. As a citizen who actually lives IN the City -- Oh my -- there really are people like me!-- I am very worried that all the extra I pay to the City will in fact go to the County. Mr. Garner, it is time for you to step up to the plate and run for Mayor -- I will send all my pennies your way. PLEASE?

more than 4 days later and those totes still sit in the row and in the middle of public sidewalks.

well, so long as the right person asks the city for money, then I'm sure it will be flowing their way soon. Amazing that when you look at how much our taxes and fees have gone up in the two years of this administration it comes up to more than the 12% they blamed the last admin. for!

I've come up with all sorts of clever campaign themes around the trash situation...but my wife tells me they would all be below me. Clever. but below me. unfortunately that kind of garbage isn't below others...they wallow in it.

OK-I don't know that I have ever removed a comment from my blog, but the last comment left put a pretty serious accusation out there that if in fact is true, I would be very, very interested in seeing the proof.

Regarding the county joining the country club...it's a new form of recreation for the prisoners out that way. I imagine Life-Plex memberships are next.

It's nice to see John Oliver got his way with the trash. I wonder if his tote is gold plated? What's next? Painting the water towers with the new name of the city "Oliverville."

Look if you are going to blame Mr Oliver for everything that goes on in River City then at least get some facts straight. He does not live in Plymouth. He lives in North Township and if is like me he pays about $105 per quarter for trash removal assuming he rents a tote from Allied Waste or Waste Management. I think the privatization is wrong but if YOU live inside the city limits and did not attend a meeting when that decision was being made and did not stand up and give an intelligent reason why the old system needed to be left in place then blame only yourself and the rest of the people in town who fail to speak up intelligently and not emotionally. Mr. Oliver is like a squeaky wheel if you want it to be you who gets the greese then go speak up!

City residents pay more taxes then the county. So please do not throw up the amount one pays who does not live in the city. You cannot compare the two. John Oliver does not live in the city. He does have a business here. It is a scary proposition to cross Mr. Oliver. If you are going to do it publicly, you had better be prepared. Your life will change. He owns the schools, the radio station, the paper, the city, the county. That is why citizens do not tackle City Hall. End of story.

Well you proved my point you opened your mouth before you engaged your brain. You can compare the costs for comparable services delivered. City residents pay for trash pick up via a tax I pay for it based on a contractual agreement that I personally have to enter into. This is exactly why John Oliver makes your type look stupid. I disagree with him on several issues but damn get you facts straight before you open mouth and insert foot! You have a roll over and play dead mentality!

I'm not sure if I should add anything to this exchange, except to say that we in the city now pay based on a contracted amount, not via taxes. And I also tend to agree that it was pretty much pointless to speak up on this issue. It was a sealed deal from the moment the new mayor was elected. I stated my protest before the point of no return without success. I think now, fearing retaliation at the voting booth, the mayor will try to find a way to accommodate outraged residents he didn't expect. He should have-but that's what happens when you are out of touch with your public.

Wednesday, I took my travel companion on its last trip, from which it didn't come home with me. I took it for a drive the day before, to...
